AbstractThe sixth volume in a 10-volume report on the historical development (1966-1973) of the 8 administrative Area Offices of the Indian Health Service (IHS) Mental Health Programs, this report presents information on the Navajo (Window Rock) Area Office. Included in this document are: (1) The Context (geography and description of the Dine, a tribe and a people); (2) Early Development (office in a brief case, addition of mental health workers, Navajo professionals, and decentralized operations with an Area Office); (3) Service Unit Programs (Tuba City's setting and staff, development of a mental health clinic, development of direct services in the first year, case summary for 1969-71, school program, aftermath following the introductory years, second professional, direct clinic services, and third change of senior staff in 1973; Gallup's outpatient services and Gallup Ward; Shiprock; Chinle; Fort Defiance; Winslow; and Crown Point); (4) Special Area Programs (Toyei BIA School's model dormitory and the Medicine Man Training Program); (5) The Change of Command (first Indian Chief of Area Mental Health Programs, 1972-73 overview, 1973-74 overview, and Navajo Health Advisory Board); (6) Summary (problems in 1973 and progress to date).
